It's been a long couple of days for the lady and I.
We left Calgary Saturday morning and got to Windsor, Ontario Monday evening. Though we dipped back into the States to make the journey a bit shorter, we still ended up driving something like over 35 hours in four days. But now we're here in Ontario for about a week so we can take it easy on the driving for a while.
When we left Calgary, we headed for Moose Jaw and planned on camping out there.
However, the weather was less than cooperative. To put it in perspective, it was snowing when we left Calgary so camping was not going to be an option. When we rolled into Moose Jaw, we decided to stay in a motel.
After some investigation on the Internet, we rolled up to a place called the Dreamland Motel - which had the best rates in town. So we go in, and I ask the guy for a room. "Well," he says. "I just gave the last motel to the woman who was in front of you." Balls, I think. "But," he continues. "For the same price as a single-bed motel room, you can stay in that house across the road."
What!? I thought it was kind of weird. Was there someone living there or something? Did he even own the house?
He took us over to see it, and sure enough, it was set up like a motel room (ie. the bathroom had towels and soaps, there were brochures by the phone, etc). So, we decided, why the hell not. For the price of a motel room, we got a two-bedroom house with a big screen TV and a kitchen - which gave us the perfect opportunity to cook up some pasta.
Ok, so that's a little weird right? But the full-on Moose Jaw experience doesn't end there. While we're cooking supper, we're sort of just hanging out in the living room, and Nicole - for some reason - is looking out the window. All of a sudden, a guy in a truck backs into the light post next to the motel, knocks it over (!!!), and proceeds to take off. A lightpost hit and run.
The post wasn't completely knocked over - mostly due to the power lines still holding it up - but it was definitely at a 45 degree angle, and glass was smashed all over the place.
Since Nicole saw it, she went over to the motel to tell the manager what she had seen. Some 20 minutes later when the police show up, they get a statement from Nicole who describes her version of the events.
After that crazy adventure, we ate our pasta, watched the movie Old School and went to bed. Wouldn't you after a night like that?
So the next few days aren't that interesting.
On our way through Southern Saskatchewan, we did find the town where they shot the CTV series "Corner Gas" and took some photos of the sets that still remained. Then we busted down to North Dakota and around 10pm we rolled into a Super 8 for the night. Oh, also, turns out that the geographical center of North America is somewhere in the Midwest. We know, because there was a monument in North Dakota and we stopped there.
Next day, same thing - but more driving. We drove about 12 hours to get from Grand Forks, North Dakota to Escabana, Michigan. Got to see a few quaint little towns and tons and tons of deer. Other than that, we listened to music and podcasts and just drove.
Yesterday, was vaguely similar. We got to drive next to Lake Michigan for a while, which was pretty cool. And crossing the border back into Canada (this time from Detroit into Windsor) wasn't nearly as difficult. We stopped at the duty free shop on the way back in and bought 24 cans of Keiths for $21 Canadian (!!!) so that made our day.
When we got to Windsor, we went to my favorite place to eat - a little hole in the wall schwarma place called the Hot Spot - and met up with my friend Jim from Orphan Choir. We spent the night at his place watching Game 6 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals (great game) and finally catching an episode of the Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien.
Today, the weather is nice again and we're driving up to Collingwood to visit some family of mine.
I think its going to be a good week in Ontario.
